We have all returned safely to US soil, to our homes, to clean water running through the tap, creature comforts, cell phones and blackberrys, friends and family. Thank you for all who have read our blog; for your much needed support through your prayers and thoughts.

Today we celebrate Labor Day in this nation. I can't help but think of those we just left, those in Bulembu and Lomngeletjane, Manzini and Mbabane, those whose labor is not recognized, those who labor night and day to place a simple meal of rice and fish stew before their families. We think we have gone to Africa to give to others, when, in reality we have been given much more. I pray for those we encountered while we were there, those who receive no rest from the life they live, that they might have seen the loving face of Christ in us, the Christ who says, "Come all who are weary and I will give you rest for your souls." Thanks be to God!

Saturday was shopping day – not just for us but for hundreds of other folks in Swaziland and South Africa as it was payday this week and also the weekend. The nearest shopping town to Bulembu is Barberton, S.A. which is about a 45 minute drive through the mountains full of timber farms. It was rainy and foggy weather but not much traffic on that road. Barberton was founded as a gold town about the same time as Johannesburg but now is mostly a central shopping and services town for the surrounding communities. We started at the Shop Rite which was chock a block full of shopping carts that made the aisles barely passable. Every cart exiting the store was over full with goods for several weeks as transportation to a store is not a trivial matter. Lee Ann was buying supplies for the daily lunches at her Community Care Center for the children living in the local homesteads who have little or nothing to eat. Feeding 50-75 six days a week takes a lot of food. She often buys canned corned beef or a canned inexpensive fish to make a simple stew to put over rice to provide some nutrition.

Next stop was the Pick and Pay – a step up from the Shop Rite and less crowded. We bought ingredients to make our own pizzas for dinner and for stir fry next week. By the time we finished shopping it was 2:30 so we had lunch at the Wimpy's next door as the S.A.-Bulembu border closes at 4:00 p.m. SHARP. If you are late, you have to retrace your steps and spend the night at Barberton.

The reality of Lee Ann's ministry is that there is very little downtime. Unexpected events occur all the time that she needs to help with as she is so caring and willing to provide the transportation to those in need. She is an inspiration to us all and it is a blessing to be able to witness her giving spirit.
We are looking forward to coming home but know each day here increases our knowledge of what the reality of poverty is for most of the people who live here. Thank you for all your prayers, Jane

Today is Saturday and it's our first overcast and chilly day in a week. We have been so spoiled with the weather!

Yesterday we did the “assembly”, crafts and games with the two to twelve year old children at the daycare center. The school age children are out of school for a month (time extended because of Swaziland being bankrupt!) so the older children add a new level of work for the daycare providers. There are 6 working computers for playing games so the older children literally stand in line for computer time. Our morning of activities was a huge success and the kids had a ball.

The afternoon was spent at the Jacaranda house with the girls. Twenty five girls were waiting for us when we arrived and so happy for the chance to do crafts. We had them do two different projects. Sister Carol said they almost never get to be creative so they loved having markers and glitter paint to use to “create”. We gave them over 100 pairs of panties collected by friends in the States and they were thrilled. We also gave them a jump rope and they immediately went outside and started jumping. They were so happy with something we take so for granted!!!!

Our friend, Lee-Ann, got a call at 6:30 or so that a gogo was very sick at her homestead and needed to go to the clinic. Transporting people is not Lee-Ann's job but she has a heart of gold and everyone calls her when they need help. She arranged for a translator and asked if I wanted to go with her. We met Zandy and off we went to the homestead. It was a very bad unpaved road to get as close as we could to the homestead (in the dark)......then the gogo's son and three women carried her to the point where we had to stop even with the four wheel truck. I will always have the image in my mind of the tiny little gogo on the ground with 4 people standing over her. She was obviously very ill with a rapid and “thready” pulse. We got her to the clinic where the nurse met us. It was very apparent that she needed to go to Piggs Peak to the hospital. Lee-Ann and I drove home for some clothes, towels, socks and food for the gogo and her son. Oh yes, for some rand (money), too!!!! The ambulance driver was called and she was transported over that unpaved road to the hospital. We haven't heard anything this morning about her but are anxious to get word. We were told by Zandy that the son and gogo had no food in their “home” and had not eaten in days. The gogo had been sleeping on the dirt floor with only a thin blanket.

Today we are going to South Africa (only a few minutes drive to the border) to shop for a few things.....toilet paper, ingredients to make more chocolate chip cookies, etc. and I need the ATM!!!

Only a few more days to be here in this little bit of heaven!!! It is a very hard life here but everyone is so warm and welcoming.

Lunch in Malanda

Yesterday, Aileen and Vickie returned to the US while Jane, Rosemary, Barb and Becky are here for another week in Bulembu. We are staying with Lee-Ann and Freddy Mc Farlane for the remaining week in a wonderfully inviting home near the edge of town.

Lee-Ann is the director of Enduduzweni Childcare centre in the heart of the town. The children who attend the centre are mainly children of workers of the sawmill in town and the other enterprises of Bulembu Ministries Swaziland (BMS). It is independent of BMS in it's funding and receives funds from other limited sources.

The families of the centre mostly come from the neighboring town of Malanda, up the hill from Bulembu. Again, it is another very poor, rural community and the people come to Bulembu because this is where work will provide income to feed their families.

Lee-Ann has several outreach projects to serve the people of Malanda, including a baby care at the centre (formerly the centre provided care for preschool children only) and most recently she has initiated a community lunch program for the Malanda women. Once a week, lunch is cooked for the community (food provided by Lee-Ann's ministries) and the women, children and a few men gather at the church (a small, half-cut timbered building). While the people gather, they also work on knitting projects that hopefully will become an enterprise to create income. The gathering also provides a time for the women to socialize and create a sense of community.

We served the people (about 45 women, children and men) rice and fish stew, cooked in large, black kettles, prepared by one of the women of Malanda. It was a humbling experience to feed these people and to provide them with a hot nourishing meal. I feel blessed by the experience and am thankful for Lee-Ann's heart for this neighboring community and its people.

On a side note, a very special moment for me was when I recognized someone I had met 3 years ago when Lee-Ann first introduced me to to the town of Malanda three years ago. She also remembered me and introduced me to her other children and grandchildren. She has the most beautiful smile!

Yes, feeding the gogos was really rewarding. A few had grandchildren on their backs and many other children following them. We fed many hungry people and that felt so good. They all seemed so appreciative. I got to love up a 3 week old, and 2 two month old babies. The gogos are very happy to share.

Today I told the story of the lost sheep to the children and we sang lots of songs. We had tea with the sister who heads up the Jacaranda house for abused girls. We wanted to figure out when we can go make cookies and do crafts with the girls. The calendar is set so that's good. This afternoon we went back to the daycare center and worked there for several hours. It was another great day and I am so thankful that I have had the opportunity to come back here.

Thanks for your prayers and your encouragement for me to make this trip. It's so much better than a “vacation”, per say!!!

Tuesday - “Visiting the Ministries”

Today we enjoyed a wonderful opportunity to visit some of the various ministries in action in Bulembu. We were joined by a “Year of Your Life” team of youth from South Africa. They were spending their “gap year” (the year between High School and whatever is next”) doing a year of mission work in Africa. They will be spending three weeks here being with the children and doing construction work. They were very inspiring and wonderful kids.

Our first stop was Bulembu Babies (previously Abandoned Babies for Christ) which has grown from one building to five residences. They have 28 babies and over 30 toddlers age 1 to 4 in residence. The recent arrivals were a pair of twins unwanted by their mother (James and John) age six weeks and a little girl found abandoned on the street. The founders of that ministry, Robin and Jerry, gave us a God spirited testimony about how each chapter of their life had prepared them for the next step of their ministry. Their faith in God and in following God's call was beyond anything most of us have experienced.

We also visited the foster homes for the orphans (age 4 to 18)--all who have devoted house mothers and fathers. The homes are small but immaculate and the children are happy and loved. Bulembu has grown since we were here two years ago. There are now about 1200 people living here and 281 orphans now in the embrace of God's love. They have established homes for the over 18 year olds and are busy establishing vocational training for those finished with their education.

We also visited the Medical Clinic, new Bakery and water-bottling plant and where they make the delicious Bulembu honey. The vision for the town is to be totally self-sustaining by 2020 so it is important to establish successful enterprises that provide income and employment to the town. Others operating here are a dairy, lumber mill and carpentry (much of the furniture here is made here), and a new technology center to teach catering and train chefs for the hospitality and tourism industry.

We had a great pizza dinner at the Lodge to end the day so we aren't suffering any hardships. Vickie and Ailene will be travelling to Johannesburg on Wednesday to fly home and the rest of us will be moving to Becky's friend Lee Anns to stay with her for our final week. We miss our friends and family but are so priviledged to meet the dedicated people working here, hear the stories of the children and be surrounded by God's love. Jane

As many of you “blog follows” know, I was very taken with a precious little guy 2 years ago. He had just arrived at the ABC nursery the day before our arrival, having been abandoned in the bush. Thankfully a gentleman heard his weak cry and rescued him. When he came here to Bulembu, he was very close to death. Because we had come from California the “aunties” named him Arnold (after our former governor)! I have been thinking about dear Arnold and praying for him for 2 years and was very anxious to see him again. As I had thought, he does have Down Syndrome and a very bad skin conditiou (probably one that would be diagnosed and cured in the States). BUT he's now walking and even saying a few words. I can tell he is loved by the aunties and accepted by the other children even with his disabilities. From what I have seen, he is the only child here with Down Syndrome. Anyway, I have a picture with him now as as 2 ½ year old that I will be very anxious to show you when I get home. I can't help but think God has a plan for this little guy saved from sure death in the bush.

This time in Bulembu continues to be wonderful, exciting and amazing. I am really getting my baby “fix”!

Warm Return

Back to Bulembu-Yebo! After a weekend visit to Hlane Wildlife Park, we made it back and the spirit and hope that is Bulembu is so alive that it sends my heart to rejoicing and thanking God again and again. The road from Piggs Peak was a 4 wheelers dream (like Mr Toad's Wild ride/Bunking Bronco mixed all in one.) Thank God the rains happened a week ago and the road had the chance to dry a bit. Last night we were invited to a going away party for the former headmaster and his wife, Jon and Jude Skinner, who are returning to the UK. Saw many folks from years back and were warmly welcomed. Lee-Ann and son Freddy were among the dear ones who greeted us. Today the welcome continued as we saw our teacher aides at Enduduzweni: Zandi, Nomsa and Mavis (from our 2009 VBS trip).

Wednesday some of the team will return to the US. Please hold Vickie and Aileen in your prayers for a safe and uneventful return (especially that their bags travel and arrive with them.)

Yes, there has been a warm return in Bulembu. I almost feel like I am “home”. The air feels fresh, the scenery is magnificent and familiar and the people we met two years ago seem so happy to see us! They see lots of teams come through but they acted like they were waiting for us! My imagination, I am thinking! There are lots of changes here.......the bakery is open and we were the first customers yesterday morning. We had been told they open at 7 so three of us hiked down the hill at 7:10 only to find out they open at 8 on Mondays!!! Swazi time is very different than “time” in the United States. Tuesdays they open at 7:30 (maybe) and so on through the week! We bought bran muffins and “fatcakes” and walked back up the very steep hill. Yummy!!! The people of Bulembu are refacing (with brick) an old rundown building for a new church and making the old church into a vocational center. I'm happy to think they are planning ahead and trying to teach the children a skill so when they leave this safe place someday they can make a living.

We spent the afternoon at the day care center and now that there are babies there I was in my glory holding and cuddling. Two very fussy babies fell asleep in my arms so that felt very good. The children all long for attention and a tender touch. I can do that!!!!

I stayed up at the lodge last night reading emails and sending them....came back to the lodge alone in the “very” dark with a lousy flashlight! I tripped and took a very ungraceful fall that seemed to take a minute for landing. I lost my grip on the computer and my glasses were about 4 feet ahead of me. It took me awhile to get organized and find the computer, glasses, adapter and power cord and get up. I thought I wouldn't tell anyone but when I got back and accessed the damages, I realized there was no getting away with being quiet about the fall. I was somewhat of a mess. My team was so sweet, mopping up the blood, running for ice, bandaids and neosporin! I do have a “fat lip” this AM and a very sore hand (I still can type, thank goodness) and knee but nothing serious....nothing broken. I couldn't take that trip to Piggs Peak and the hospital there! Your prayers for me, I'm sure, is what kept me from being more seriously hurt!!!! Thanks.

Hope to get the blog off this AM so when you wake up tomorrow you can get our news. We are well and very happy and content in Bulembu!!!

We arrived in Bulembu on Sunday afternoon and was amazed by the beauty here. It's like living in paradise It. It seem as though we drove forever up a dirt road to get here, But it was all worth it.

The people here are great and all the children seem to have a very sad history. But they are in a wonderful placebeing taken care of by very passionate people. We ask that you continue your prayers..

This has been an exciting week. The children were so eager to do all the things we had planned. Finger painting was entirely new to them and they loved it. Our animated Bible stories held their attention. Oh how they loved learning our songs and singing their songs to us. Lovely melodic voices all blended together. I'm happy to be here. - Ailene

Today is Friday, our last day of Vacation Bible School. It was a beautiful, warm day and we all shedded several layers of clothing! We had about 60 children waiting at the school for us and by the time we set up and started our assembly, there were 90! The songs that we taught through the week were like second nature to the children and they sang a few of their songs for us. They really seem to enjoy teaching us! The story was about Daniel and his faith in God. The team each played a part with stick figures as a team member told the story of Daniel being thrown in the lions den. We handed out “prayer bracelets” that children from one of our California home churches had made. They were thrilled with the gift and kept admiring their bracelets throughout the morning. The games were fun for the children........they did the parachute, jump rope, relay races with Beanie babies, tag and other activities. They colored during craft time. They all seem to love crayons and paper and just having time to color inside the lines. The attention to detail was really nice to see. At the end of the day, the children all got their own bag full of “goodies”. They loved that part!!! There were lots of hugs as the children left for their homesteads. It was sad to say “goodbye” knowing we will probably never see these precious people again.

Homestead Visits

After VBS in the morning, we returned to Manzini to pick up supplies to take to two homesteads about 20 miles outside of town with Chris, and several Manyano (Methodist Women). For all of us, the experience was extremely difficult to see the face of poverty in two families we visited. We brought a month's worth of food supplies along with some clothing and shoes. We sat with them and took in the destitute surroundings and listened to their stories. We cannot put into words the feelings or experience that would do justice to the moment. Our hearts are broken to the core.

Chris gave us bracelets on Wednesday night with these words that seem to be the only way to see hope in the situation we faced today. It says, “God is Big Enough.” We must cling to this thought to find any hope for these people. Becky

As we started our last day at VBS we knew it was going to be hard to leave the children we had spent so much time this week, The smiles the hugs and all the thank yous and all those beautiful smiles.

As the children are telling us how much they have enjoy the time we have spent with them we're trying so hard to let them know how important it has been for all of us to be able to be here and spend this time with them. All I can say is” Thank You Jesus” Vickie

Today was a great day. The sun was shining and it was warmer than the other days. We got to the school at 9:15 and had 75 cute little children waiting for us. They seemed so excited to see what was in store. We all had silly “Cat in the Hat” hats on and they really enjoyed that. It seems like they don't have adults acting “goofy” very often so that is lots of fun for them.

The theme of the day was “Christ has no body” from Romans 12:5. The children were very interested in the story and the craft, finger painting, was a big hit. They got to throw homemade scarves around in games they also did fun relay races. Play-doh was so much fun for the children. They have very few things to play with and the feel of the play-doh brought lots of smiles. They molded animals, baskets and little people. Quite clever! The school's Headmaster was astonished at seeing how creative his students could be.

VBS went long and after giving lunch and having a closing (singing the Lord's Prayer in both languages) they ran off to their homesteads at 1:15.

This afternoon we stayed very busy getting all the children's handiwork and other little treats in their decorated bags......tomorrow is the last day so they will take everything home.......toothbrushes, toothpaste, decorated handkerchiefs, candy, lollipops, bookmarks and a friendship bracelet.

Tonight we are invited to dinner at St. Paul's Methodist Church. Tomorrow after the VBS we will go to two different homesteads for a visit. We bought groceries and blankets to take and we'll take the handmade aprons, girl's skirts, shoes and some clothes.

Thank you friends and family for the cards and letters that Becky shared with us last night. It brought tears and smiles to all of us. Saturday we will hit the road for a game reserve for a day and night. Sunday we travel to Bulembu. Hopefully we will be able to “blog” from there. We have had no internet access but will be eager to hear news when we do.

Greetings from Manzini, Swaziland. The rain stopped and we were able to travel the dirt road to Lomngeletjane on Tuesday. The road was slippery from being saturated but Becky did a spectacular job of driving. The drive reminded me of the drive to Lake Tahoe in snow and ice! We were a little late getting to the school because of the weather and the children were waiting for us when we arrived. It was very cold and windy so we did all the activities in the classrooms.....lots of chairs being moved from place to place and lots of rearranging, but it worked out great. We had 40 darling children between the ages of 5 and 15. They were well mannered, spirited and ready to have fun. We had lots of Swazi helpers who translated and made our days easier. The lesson was on the Golden Rule and it went very well. The children decorated bags (for collection of their “treasures”) to be taken home on Friday. In games they did the limbo under a broom stick while saying the Bible verse, “do unto others, as you would have them do to you”. They also played “hot potato” and really loved that.......lots of smiles and laughs.

Today is a beautiful day! It is sunny and clear with a temperature of 60 degrees. The drive to Lomngeletjane was much easier today and we arrived on time!! We had 60 children and they were all very excited to get the Vacation Bible School going. The theme today was “the lost sheep” and the children loved hearing the story and answering questions about the shepherd and his sheep. The cherubs are all very soft spoken and shy about talking in class so we were pleased they participated. The craft was a HUGE hit. They were given small squares to decorate with magic markers and glitter paint. The squares will be made into a “friendship quilt” and into banners. They also decorated a large handkerchief and they did a wonderful job being creative. We all think there are many “budding” young artists in Swaziland. We are very eager to show you pictures of their artwork. Games were able to be outside and the children enjoyed doing races, hokey poky and “follow the leader”.

We made peanut butter and jelly sandwiches both days for the children and the helpers. We gave out a sandwich, an oranges and a drink. For tomorrow we are making poloney (looks like our bologna!) sandwiches. Yum!!! Two of the girls are out now buying 12 loaves of bread and 100 apples.

The team has been very happy with the way the VBS is going and we feel very lifted up in prayer by our families and friends in the USA. Keep the prayers and good thoughts coming and we will keep up the enthusiasm towards these children in this beautiful country.

Good morning! It's Monday here in Swaziland and it has been pouring rain since yesterday (even thunder and lightning). I got up early to go over my story, the Golden Rule, and at 7AM it was decided to cancel Vacation Bible School for the day. The road to Lomngeletjane is not paved and it is a 40 minute ride “over and about”. It is too dangerous to travel until the rain stops. OK, now a day to regroup and relax after three very busy days. Time to “blog”!!!! I am missing all of you and love you all. We will go out this afternoon to find some lunch and go back to the airport for the 4^th time. Supposedly, Aileen's bag will be flown in today from Johannesburg at 1:45. We'll see. It is very cold today and with no heat, we are bundled with all our layers!!!

Our first three days have been full of eye-opening and heartwarming experiences. We worshiped with a wonderful spirited Methodist congregation in Lomngeletjane Sunday morning. Their beautiful voices singing hymns in SiSwati could be heard in heaven I'm sure. The children are so beautiful and take care of one another in such a loving way. We enjoyed every minute of the two hour service. The countryside around where we are staying is very scenic and the countryside very poor. I am humbled by how much we have and how much we take for granted. Everyone has been so nice to us. I feel lifted up by your prayers – Blessings, Jane

Perseverance-This word is how I would describe our first days here. Excitement, long haul flight, lost baggage, new environment, bumpy roads, tiredness and jet lag, unfamiliar territory, a true VIM experience. We're enjoying an unexpected rest (thank you God) with a rainy spring day. The road to Lomngeletjane would have been too difficult for us to navigate in the storm. The team has had several wonderful experiences: enjoying the Swazi cultural village, shopping at Ngwenya Glass, worshiping at Lomngeletjane (seeing a couple of familiar faces) and meeting the children of Sandra Lee Centre. For those of you who know Chris McLain's story of Nomile, we met her yesterday, along with 27 of her mates at Sandra Lee Centre. We read to them, made chocolate chip cookies, and gave many hugs. Robin and her staff were very gracious to allow us time to spend with the children. (Please keep those prayers coming this way, thanks!) - Love and miss you all, Becky (ps. Thursday August 11th

Well, we all arrived today at different times and only one bag is missing! All the medications made it and we had no problems at the border. God is good!!!! The bag will be delivered when found to the Manzini airport and we'll pick it up there. We were met at the airport by Chris, the Swaziland missionary and then Becky went off to rent a van. She drove the van on the left hand side of the road (not easy) through Johannesburg and in to Swaziland.......about a 6 hour trip not including stops for gas, food, bathroom, etc. It was dark when we arrived here and with little sleep Becky did a great job. It was a very long 48 hours!!! Tomorrow we'll visit the bank for money and do other errands. A “go show” day, we're thinking.
Thanks for all the prayers for our safe travel and the safe travel for all the medications and supplies. It's 10PM here and we are all way over tired!! Good night.

As I have been preparing for this trip for the last 10 months, planning and fretting over all the details and arrangements, a wise friend told me that the most important part of what we do is just to show up, be present to God's working in the world. Yes, the details are important but to live faithfully and trust in God's goodness and mercy and God will bless us anywhere, just as the noonday shines here or in southern Africa or anywhere else in the world.
To all who are following our blog: Today is the day we begin our journey. This is the day that the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it!

Go Forth with God

Yebo! Vickie and I had a wonderful commissioning today at FUMC Pacific Grove and a blessing over all of the wonderful items made by the churches involved in the VIM effort. God works in many ways. Pastor Pam's sermon was on the story of Peter getting out of the boat from Mathew. It brought tears and a smile to my face as I remember one of our first days in Bulembu two years ago. Robin of Abandoned Babies for Christ said she dreamed of that story one night which was part of her motivatino for starting her amazing ministry. Take the Church with You

My belief that it is important to engage your church in the mission of a VIM trip evolved from my first VIM experience in Colon, Panama in 2007. Though four members of my church joined that mission team, we didn’t talk to the congregation much about it before we left. We did minimal fundraising and shared hardly anything about where we were going and why. Simply put, we did little to invite our church family to join us on our journey, and this was a missed opportunity for mission and ministry.

About a year later I was asked “what is the most unexpected place to which your faith in Christ has taken you in order to make a difference in someone’s life?” Colon, Panama was my answer—one of the most dangerous places I ever hope to be. I wasn’t taken there to “do something for someone”, as I had expected, but rather to be awakened to God’s amazing grace and spirit and to share God’s love with others. I learned what it is like to lose your personal freedom, to live behind barbed wire and to see people with very little give generously and gracefully. And the “make a difference in someone’s life” turned out to be mine. If I had shared my journey—the preparation, experience and reflection afterwards—I believe it might have made a difference in my church’s outreach ministry and changed some lives besides my own.

In 2009 I felt God calling me to Bulembu, Swaziland with the VIM team led by Becky Perry of the San Jose District. This VIM trip had a connectional mission, that is to say to build connections between the people and children of Swaziland and our churches. This time my church took a much different approach. We spent six months giving free lunches after church to talk about the crisis in Swaziland, organizing sewing projects for items needed there, fundraising, publishing articles in our church newsletter about where and why we were going, putting short “Africa Moments” into each Sunday’s bulletin and papering our bulletin boards with photos of Swaziland children we were praying for. What a difference this made in the enthusiasm and support we generated for mission and ministry.

This journey and our connection as a church continues today. We have chosen Swaziland as a major focus for our outreach ministry and we remain engaged is what is going on there. One project that really tugged at our hearts was VIM team member Chris McLain’s “One Child, One Heart at a Time” ministry in rural Swaziland. Chris has been a Methodist volunteer in Swaziland for two years and she joined our mission team in Bulembu.

In Swaziland, most people live in rural villages where they have a small homestead. There are few roads and no personal vehicles, so children walk to school which can be up to two hours each way. If there is no school within that distance, they don’t get any education. Chris recognized a need for a school in a remote area called Lomngeletjane and felt called by God to build one. It was such a privilege to meet her and an eye opener to hear her stories.

My church, First United Methodist Church Pacific Grove, is raising money for Chris to complete the school and will continue to provide support for Bulembu ministries. Though only five members of our church were on the VIM team, my church family is living out this mission right where they are: spreading Jesus’ message of love to people they will never see.

Hearing God's Call

My head is working overtime to sort through all I experienced in Bulembu and I confess to feeling a bit sorry for myself because I am now physically separated from such a community of love. One special blessing of the trip was having so many people share their stories and testimonies with us about how they were called by God to be doing what they do in Bulembu. Robyn, the founder of Abandoned Babies for Christ ministries, has heard many calls from God, the most recent being to adopt a baby girl into their family despite being grandparents themselves. Calley, age 18, has volunteered in Lee Ann’s Enduduzeni childcare/preschool center for the past year, hearing her call during a high school mission trip to Bulembu.

Ruth was called to Bulembu Ministries foster homes from her church in the U.K. and her one year original commitment has extended into three. Nicole, a nurse from Vancouver, was called to be a volunteer in the Medical Clinic. With the nearest Doctor over an hour away on a dirt road, she has to dispense medicines and do minor surgery without the help of a physician or the internet. Chris, the one Volunteer in Mission in Swaziland heard a call to come alone to this country in crisis to be the hands of Christ where it is so desperately needed.. Such service carries many risks. As I was writing this I checked her blog only to find out she and two visiting volunteers Gary and Jeri had been robbed while in their car in Nelsprit.

These are just a few of the amazing disciples we met who have committed their lives to serving God 24/7, not just when convenient. I pray I will not only hear God’s calling for me but that I will act upon it with such energy and commitment as the people of Bulembu.

It was the smiles.......

Since my return, friends and family have asked me what it was like in Bulembu, Swaziland. Now, that's a good question! I can't summarize in a short conversation, but I can say it was all about the smiles. These precious little ones were happy. They were cold, tattered and some were hungry and dirty, but they were happy. They loved holding hands and hugging and seeing their smiling faces on the digital camera. They loved to sing, swing and get special attention. How can these children be so full of smiles? I'm not sure, but I am sure that Christ is living in them and with them in Bulembu. He has been invited in by the town and they are living proof that He is faithful and that He loves them and their caregivers. My lesson is that I don't need much to smile in this "land of plenty" but I do need Christ. I will forever be changed by my experience in Swaziland.

It Takes A Village...

Bulembu is such a beautiful example of community. I felt safe and relaxed there. In my travels, there seems to be a recurring theme: I find myself envious of the slower pace and the healthy priorities of other cultures. We've as much to learn from "them" as they do from us. Having met many wonderful servant caregivers of God's children there, I am now more curious about the care being given to the children in my community. It really does take a village to raise a child. What is my village doing? What am I doing?

We've all returned to our respective churches and homes, back to family, friends, routines and creature comforts. And yet something has changed in each of us. We gave and received love in multitude with those in Bulembu and it continues to expand as we share our experiences and love with others.
Jane, Donna, Farida, Mary Jane and Mary D. shared their stories last Sunday at Pacific Grove UMC and received a warm welcome including this wonderful banner. Others have began sharing their stories with families and friends. Even this blog has been a way to share stories of how we have been touched by those affected by HIV/AIDS.
Before leaving Africa, some of us began discussing how we would like to be in ministry with those we encountered in Swaziland through partnerships and future VIM trips.
Lee-Ann McFarlane of Enduduzweni Community Care Centre laid out the return welcome mat for us whenever we choose. We have new friends and loved ones across the ocean and are hearts are turned towards AFRICA!
For me, this new beginnings is the excitement I envisioned when I first thought of leading a VIM trip to Africa. To connect others with the Hope of Bulembu, a town with God's vision is only the start to what God has planned, for us and those in this hurting world, to share the love that is Jesus Christ.

Prayer for Bulembu and the country of Swaziland

The Swaziland 2009 VIM team is all back safely now. Hallie, Heather and I returned yesterday after the long flight from South Africa via London. We are incredibly thankful to those whom we met, shared their stories and their hearts and touched our lives on this incredible journey.
On our last days together, a team prayer for Bulembu and for the country of Swaziland was organized and compiled by Mary Jane.
This experience will forever burn in our hearts. God has so greatly blessed us and we are thankful.

Prayer for Bulembu and Swaziland

Our prayer for Bulembu is one of faith, hope and love. The awesome power of our Lord and Savior will give Bulembu the ability to achieve their mission.

We ask that the Lord bless and protect the people of Swaziland, especially the Gogos (grandmothers), the mothers and all the children. May they feel the Lord’s presence and give them strength in all they do.

God bless the orphans that they will be loved in their family. God bless the children of the village that He will continue to provide nourishment for their bodies and their souls.

God bless the workers, grant them patience, strength, compassion and grace that they will continue to feel the love of God in their hearts and receive the blessings He has for them.

We pray for the future of these beautiful and resilient children that they feel God’s love and presence every minute of every day and become the role models in this wonderful country in the years to come.

We ask that Bulembu continue to grow and to be a place of healing for all who experience it – resident and visitor alike.We give thanks to God for being blessed with the spirit and hope of those in Bulembu.

We pray for restoration and healing of our brothers and sisters in Swaziland and throughout Africa.

Rebel With A Cause

While most of the team has returned to the States and are settling into their daily routines, Heather, Hallie and I remain in Swaziland until Sunday. Hallie and I are in Manzini with Chris McLain while Heather remains in Bulembu with Lee-Ann, spending time with the girls at Jacaranda Homes.preschoolers at Lomngeletjane Methodist School

Chris took us to Lomngeletjane Methodist School today, not far from Manzini and yet a world away. Manzini is a bustling city while Lomngeletjane is rural and poor. I am struck by the incredible contrast. Chris has done much to bring a school this small community. There are 5 primary classrooms, an administrative office and toilets recently built. We also visited the preschool housed in a small, primative structure.
More than 25 children were in this little room built of corrugated tin siding and wood boards called offcuts. It was cold and not weather proof. Chris is overseeing the building of a teacher's house and has plans to expand the school to include secondary grade classrooms.
Tomorrow Chris will take us to a Methodist care point about an hour from here in the Lowveld. We will be taking sandwiches for the children's lunch and uniforms sewed by Thoko, Thini and Thembi of the Manyano of St.Paul's Methodist Church in Manzini.
Chris' passion for the work she is doing is so evident. She has deep compassion for the Swazi people and has a good understanding of the complexities of navigating the "system" here. She calls herself a rebel and she really is a Rebel with a Cause, with Micah 6:8 practiced in all she does. What does the Lord require of you: to seek justice, love kindness and walk humbly with God.

Rhino Spotting

Greetings! We were very fortunate to see four rhinos on our last drive in Kruger this morning. We have seen all of the big five animals which is very special. We parted ways with Becky, Heather and Hallee this noon. They have headed back to Bulembu for an extra week. Chris left on Friday back to her homebase ministry in Swaziland and the rest of us (8) are having a lovely last night at the Arches Guest House in Nelspruit, South Africa. The owner, Sue, is treating us like family. She made a lovely vegetable pasta for dinner and the rest of the crew is having coffee and dessert with her as I write this.
Becky has done an amazing job for us as the organizer for this trip. The logistics have been very difficult but have gone perfectly smoothly thanks to her advance planning. We are so blessed to have her as a leader.
We ask for your continued prayers as we begin to process all that we have experienced. Some of us will probably need some "half way house" or "detox" kind of quiet time when we get home as so much has touched our hearts during our journey and we are sad to be leaving the children behind.
We start home tomorrow at 9:15 p.m for our long trek home. We look forward to returning to our loved ones and church family. Jane

Leaving Bulembu and Entering the Wild

Well we just left Bulembu this morning, it was a little sad that everyone was leaving and saying goodbye to the children was very sad for all of us. We are in Kruger National Park, which is acutally in South Africa and not Swaziland. It was so amazing to drive in and just this afternoon we saw:

waterbuck
warthogs
hornhill-bird
hornroller-bird
african elephants a baby one too!
many giraffe
water buffalo
zebra
a herd of elephants together
2 hippos
and to top it off right when we were supposed to be heading back to the camps...
we saw 3 male lions and 2 female that walked right next to the car
It was really amazing to see them in their natural environment and know that they are able to roam here... but we still get to see them is awesome.

It was so wonderful to be in Bulembu we learned so much and truly will be changed in our hearts and minds forever. I think everyone is excited for the weekend, but ready for the long trip home too!

Bulembu Babes

Today was our final day of VBS with the Community Center… it was a busy morning (the kids appeared a bit more energized today) but all in all we were able to do some great activities. The hand paintings turned out really well and everyone is excited to share them with our communities back home. We spent the afternoon visiting some of the foster/ community homes. They’ve set them up in different areas of the town to create closeness within the community. It was a great addition to all we’ve been exposed to while visiting and I was grateful to see where so many of the children we’ve spent time with actually sleep at night.
We are already coming close to the end of our time here in Bulembu. So our discussion tonight lead us towards our inner thoughts on what it will be like to bring home the “emotional spirits” we’ve been enchanted by and experiencing. Of course the love we have shared with the children and one another will remain in our hearts forever, but as most things time changes all and the awareness we may feel now is something that can certainly be lost with time. It is a powerful tool to remember we have access to all the love we need and should reminded ourselves daily .These lessons of love and patience travel across all borders and boundaries, but we must actively continue to pursue and seek out the goodness and passion of life in order to fulfill what God has placed on our hearts and minds through the community of Bulembu. MARY JANE: I am overflowing with gratitude for the amazing opportunity of being here in Bulembu with the mission team. I have been deeply touched by the experiences we have had and the beautiful spirit of the children and adults we have encountered. We will have much to share on our return.
Tonight after evening prayers letters of support from home were passed out. I can’t begin to tell you how much it meant to me to receive letters of support and prayerful encouragement from members of the church, some of which did not even know me. Thank you, thank you, thank you, for the thoughtfulness and expression of love. The letters meant a lot to all of us, serving as a reminder that the church family is right here with us in spirit and prayers.
This has truly been a transformational experience! I am humbly grateful!!

BECKY PERRY: What an amazing week. I can’t believe we’re almost ready to end our trip! Your prayers and love from the distance have been felt and appreciated. As much as we have done during the week, my energy level remains high. The team is an awesome group of women and we’ve enjoyed each other’s company. We have seen and experienced the spirit of Bulembu, the lives of the children and those in ministry with them and the hope and vision of lives changed through God’s love.
A quick report, today I had the opportunity to see 3 of the 4 brothers who came to Bulembu seeking shelter when I was here last year: Sambulo, Njbulo, and Mbongeni. One of the photos on the Bulembu board is of the brothers. You may remember that their gogo or grandmother had left them on their own with Sambulo,13 in charge and the the youngest, Banele still in diapers. They since have been moved to a Bulembu Ministry home and are attending Bulembu Christian Academy and have learned English. They are well and happy and remembered me. Youngest brother, Banele is living at ABC and the boys can visit their brother when they want to. It was an inspiring visit to see them and the change in their spirit!

ROSEMARY: Wow, another wonderful day. Bulembu is an amazing place…..a beautiful town and full of darling children and caregivers. Of course, I’ve never seen anything like it!!! The weather was sunny and I even shed three layers during the “heat” of the afternoon. The VBS on “Noah’s Ark” went very well and the preschoolers loved seeing us each day and getting all the special attention. They wanted to hug and hold hands and be close all the time we were there. I have great pictures and can’t wait to get them uploaded when I get home. This evening Becky had a great surprise for us……letters from our friends and family written before we came here. There were lots of tears reading the notes…………I cried the most I think. Thank you all!!! I miss home and talking to my children and daughters-in-law and friends but it’s been a trip of a lifetime and I do feel I’m where God wants me to be . Oh, I do think I’ve changed since arriving. A very sweet lady(older than me) came up to me after church on Sunday and told me I reminded her so much of her 91 year old aunt!!! I was very gracious and just smiled nicely as any good Christian would do!!! Guess I look more tired than I feel!!!! Thanks for all your encouragement and my next adventure is a face lift I think.

Awakening our Awareness

First of all everyone says hello to their families and loved ones. We’ve not been able to get everyone onto the internet here, but want you all to know they are safe and healthy and having an amazing time. We are reading the comments on the blog so if anyone wants to specifically say a hello or something to any members on the team it would be good to post a comment on the blog comments so I can tell them your greetings.
We went back to the center and enjoyed another day with the Children’s Community. The children were just wonderful and so excited to have us back again. We’ve been able to teach the kids and teachers new things and provide something outside of their daily routine. It really makes such a difference for them to have constant activities going on that it makes it hard not to feel badly when we leave. There are close to 50 children on any given day at the morning program and then the afternoon group. The center is certainly put to great use. It can be very cold here in the mornings as I’m sure you’ve gathered by our pictures… we are all bundled up… so we’ve been trying to find ways to keep the kids warm especially if we’re planning outside activities. It has been really amazing to think that places like the center and the other programs here are non-profit charities… so most of the people here are volunteers and are at the mercy of donations for crafts, games, and books. Basically all the items the kids and most of the adults come from donations.
We continued onto the Christian Academy in Bulembu for the afternoon and broke up into small groups to go to the classrooms. The school was able to host the academy in an old building that was used for cows. They spent a year fixing up the building to work as a new space for the school. It is settled into the hillside across from our house in a beautiful location with three long buildings, a field, and playground. The kids attend all the regular academic studies and also are required to go to singing, dance and theater classes. All the children have uniforms and a smile on their face! The children are so excited for school and enjoyed performing their routines and class assignments even while we were there. The teachers are all from different places and are very passionate about their jobs. It felt really good to give them a bag or two of donations pens and such for the schools use. We were all so impressed.
My favorite part of watching the team is during playground time…. Well maybe the kid’s tooth brushing time too, that’s a whole other story. But when the kids go to play out on the playground some of them go running over to the play structures, but most of them just go running up to one of us grab for our hands or our coats and just want a little love. They are so full of trust and love towards what we would call a stranger it’s amazing to look them in the eye and give them a little hug because that’s all they really want from us.
Coming here on mission may have been a decision some of us were not so sure of. When we started this journey we may have felt moments of guilt or worries of feeling selfish, knowing that others were not able to come along with us. It’s been nice to share those worries and pre-thought with one another and trust in our being here as part of God’s plan. Trusting that our intentions are good and that we come here to share love with the children and learn from that experience to bring out in the world. Having the awareness and awakening as to what is possible in a community for the people and sharing the successes of that is what we will be able to bring to the table when we go home. The big lesson today was: Come to God as you are and be an honest person in your walk with your vision and mission no matter where you are.

Today was our first day teaching Vacation Bible School with the Enduduzweni Community Care Center! The children are so happy to have us visiting and seem to really love our energy and projects. We broke off into groups and each spent time with the kids doing story time, crafts, games and music. The teachers were able to translate to the children( very helpful) but we all agreed that even when the kids didn’t know exactly what we were saying or asking them to do they were always kindhearted. This kindness and loving spirit has been a thread throughout the community here, but certainly comes through in the children’s hearts. Some of the team members cooked a yummy hot meal for the afternoon crew at the center. Many of the children attending the afternoon session are not always able to get a full meal at home so this program is greatly appreciated and needed.

We continue to be amazed by the way God is calling each and every one of us to be present with ourselves here in Bulembu. This “calling” presence within each of us in many ways is just coming to the surface, and many of our worries, doubts or just concepts as to why we thought we were coming here are surfacing and perhaps changing altogether. The experience of sharing moments with children and the simple act of love, kindness and sharing is a lesson to be reminded of in our calling here. The excitement in a child’s simple actions or just glance most certainly is one of the most beautiful moments created and we should all be so lucky to experience and acknowledge that joy every day.

A little about our experience today: What surprised us…
Donna~ The weather was beautiful today, wonderful for playing games outside in the sun. The children were really attentive during all our projects.
Rosemary~ It’s been pretty cold here, happy to have a fireplace.
Jane: We had the children put animal stickers on Noah’s Ark projects. The fact that they didn’t know what a sticker was heightens the our awareness of the cultural differences.
Heather~ Things that surprised me: How long they were able to pay attention to the storytelling. We had the teachers interpret our questions for the kids. We placed animals up on the felt Noah’s ark board and showed the animals around to the kids. They were so cute during story time! We asked them what kind of animals were on the boat they answered, “animals” We laughed and said “what kind of animals?”
Farida~ The kids were so good I was surprised at how well behaved they were, none of them cried or whined and were so polite to one another and to us. I was surprised at how well they ate and finished all of their food.
Rosemary~ They were really happy kids. It was wonderful see them all smiling, they were so happy to have us there. With so little they were still so excited and happy.
Mary~ I would reach out to them to give them a high five and they would just grab and hold my hand. It just took my heart away.

Bulembu Beauty

Well we've been here for 3 days now and it has truly been an amazing experience so far. The internet connection is limited so we were unable to connect this past weekend.
It feels like we've been here a long time because everyone is so friendly and caring towards us. The little amount of time we've spent here in Bulembu has been so full and been such a blessing for us all. Last night in our prayer time we discussed the children here and how loving and caring they are
to one another, their "missionary parents" and us (visitors). It is really amazing to see how little
they have as far as material things, and yet how grateful they are for everything they have. We've seen such an amazing light in each of these children. The amazing grateful attitude of each and everyone of them is the puzzle piece we can bring back to our communities and churches to share with everyone at home.
Everyone is doing well and so happy to be here. Each day continues to bring such new experiences and all around beautiful awareness of what this place is about and how we are connected to it. Blessings to all those we are with us in spirit and we are in prayer and thinking of you all.

We made it!

Well after a long trip and many hours we've made it to Africa. We are just waiting now for Becky and Chris to come back from the store... they had a little flat tire issue but our friend here, Sue, who housed us last night is going to pick them up so we can make our way out to Bulembu. It was wonderful to get a full nights rest in a bed last night. The plane rides were long and we got some rest but last night was sure a treat. We had a lovely breakfast this morning made by Sue the woman who runs the B and B we stayed in "Arches" in Nelspruit. We are all excited and eager to reach our final destination, everything has truely been a blessing since we've arrived. Everyone is healthy and seem rested for the next leg of our journey. The drive from JoeBerg to Nelspruit was beautiful and we saw some interesting countryside ranging from mountains, streams, orange and lemon trees, prickly pear catus, squatter camps, small towns, to Milly's restaurant where we stopped for lunch. Our drivers have all been lovely and kept us safe... but they sure drive steadily here. Everyone misses home but we are ready for the blessings ahead and truely ready to be of service. Many of us received the blessings of our congregations as we prepared to begin our journey. The five of us going from First United Methodist Church in Pacific Grove felt the power of prayer during our consecration at the Sunday morning service. We will be holding our church family near to our hearts in the days ahead for comfort and security. We are so fortunate to come from a place where God's light shines very brightly and we hope we can carry this light with us to Bulembu.

People have asked, why go to Africa? Why Swaziland? Here's our compelling reason:
Bulembu: City of Hope
The African country of Swaziland has the highest incidence of AIDS in the world with almost 40% of the population infected. The children have been most affected, losing one or both parents, left in the care of ailing and/or aging grandparents. According to UNICEF there are approximately 60,000 orphans in Swaziland. The United Nations issued a report that stated, with the current AIDS condition, this beautiful country will be extinct by the year 2050. If ever there was a more hopeless, desperate situation, this is it.
But God IS at work in Swaziland, in a place called Bulembu, the City of Hope. Bulembu is a small town on the northern border of Swaziland. It once was a mining town that went bankrupt and was abandoned in 2001. In 2006, it was rebirthed by Bulembu Ministries Swaziland (BMS) and the town is beginning to grow again. Timber harvest and honey production are some of the businesses that have revived the local economy and employment for the 1000 plus residents now inhabiting the town. But the greater purpose and vision of BMS, a non-profit group, is for Bulembu to become a place of refuge, providing hope and healing, to those suffering from AIDs, poverty, abuse and abandonment.
The deepest desire of those who work in Bulembu is to display the compassion of Jesus by being Christ’s hands and feet in ministry; feeding the hungry, rescuing abandoned babies, renovating foster homes for homeless orphans, providing jobs and restoring dignity. BMS’s goal is to nurture healthy individuals and families, to educate and equip leaders within Swaziland, and to create a vibrant, self sustaining community.

Welcome to the blog of the Swaziland 2009 Volunteers in Mission team from the California/Nevada Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church. We will be traveling to Bulembu, Swaziland, Africa from June 30 to July 14, 2009.
We invite you to join us as we follow God's call to be be in connection with the ministries and people of Bulembu. We will lead vacation bible school, be in fellowship with the local Methodist society, support the local ministries, and be in relationship with those directly affected by the AIDS crisis in this part of the world
